Render of ninth iteration with texture

Check it out :)

Six Iterations

I have used several modifiers already, of these 'FFD' has been the most successful. My narrative follows the 'blooming' of something botanic, organic and each new form derives from the orginal seed. It becomes greener and greener as it matures just like a living plant.

Learning to use modifiers in 3DS Max

I have learnt how to replicate an object, here I have applied the 'bend' modifier. This gave my form a petal-like layer. I changed its colour to a more earthy brown as it is immature in its development. This will turn green as it blooms.

Getting better at Solidworks

By working through tutorials I have found on google, I am starting to get to grips with the software. Here is another iteration of my final solidworks model. It is beginning to look more like a bud, teak adds an organic, botanic texture to the form. I have used lofted boss' to create stems.

Inside is another spherical form; a seed from which something will bloom.

Learning to use 3DS Max (even if not my final Solidworks model).

This is the result of playing around with extrusions. It has given me some direction in that I have created 'petals' and a 'bloom' effect, although tweaks will be necessary. 'Virescent' shall have a misty, turning to green influence on my form. I am trying to learn to create softer, more organic lines and edges too.

Solidworks sketch of bulb form

Inspiration for this form comes from a bulb or a tulip like shape. I want to add more petal like qualities so when it comes to manipulating the form in 3DS Max, my iterations 'bloom out' of this form.

Elements of precedents selected in Photoshop

I have tried to capture the elements of hierachy in some precedent images. All are shapes which I thought relevant to my word 'bloom', revealing folds, peeling forms, layers and textures. They are quite organic.

The green screen helps to create contrast between shapes which I want and dont want, and it will make spleening easier in Solidworks.
At the moment I am only concerned with the word 'bloom'. 'Virescent' and 'derivative' will too form part of my narrative, however their influence will take place at a later stage in 3DS Max. For now I am pulling apart shapes to put into Solidworks and create a form/primary iteration.

Precedent images

Thinking about my words...

Three words and some sketches

Bloom
Virescent
Derivative

An attempt to capture the essence of derivative, final form derives from three original forms. Indicates a process is involved.

Some quick sketches of bloom. Tried to capture something without being too representational and drawing flowers. Hopefully captures some change, erratic growth and movement.
